SoftBank Group Corp. has appointed Tim Mackey as Group Compliance Officer, following the departure of his predecessor.
Mackey joined SoftBank Group’s head office in Tokyo in November 2018 as Deputy General Counsel, and for the past six months has also been serving as Head of the Compliance Department in Tokyo, as well as the Regional General Counsel of SoftBank Group International for the Japan, APAC and India regions.
He will report to Robert Townsend, Chief Legal Officer and Senior Vice President of SoftBank, and Chief Legal Officer of SoftBank Group International.
Mackey takes up a new role at a very crucial time for the company as it’s strategy is under renewed scrutiny after media reports of big bets on derivatives.
In this role, he will be responsible for overseeing SoftBank’s compliance function on a global basis and promoting the highest standards of legal and ethical conduct at SoftBank and its subsidiaries.
However, his appointment is subject to approval by the company’s board of directors at its next meeting.
Commenting on Mackey’s appointment as Group Compliance Officer, Townsend said “Tim is an excellent choice for Group Compliance Officer. He brings to the job unique knowledge of SoftBank and its global operations and experience in previously managing aspects of SoftBank’s compliance function.”
Townsend added “he has been a trusted partner and valued advisor to me since joining SoftBank. The combination of Tim’s legal and compliance expertise and intimate knowledge of SoftBank position him well for continued success in this critical role.”
“I am honored to have the opportunity to expand my responsibilities at SoftBank and am excited to work alongside a fantastic team of compliance professionals, both at SoftBank and across our global portfolio of companies,” said Mackey.
Prior to joining SoftBank, he spent more than 13 years serving as an attorney for leading global law firms, including Paul Hastings LLP and Milbank LLP.
Mackey has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Japanese and English, and received his Bachelor of Laws (Honors) from the University of Auckland in New Zealand.
SoftBank Group is comprised of SoftBank Group Corp., a holding company that includes telecommunications, internet services, AI, smart robotics, IoT and clean energy technology providers; Arm Ltd, the world’s leading semiconductor IP company; and the SoftBank Vision Fund, which is investing up to $100 billion to help extraordinary entrepreneurs transform industries and shape new ones.
