A letter of award (LoA) have been issued by SJVN Ltd. to EKI Energy Services Ltd. for registration, issuance, and trading of international renewable energy certificates (IRECs) for its 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NHPS) project in Himachal Pradesh.

Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) or International Renewable Energy Certificate (IREC) mechanism is a market-based instrument to promote renewable energy and facilitate compliance of Renewable Purchase Obligations (RPO). An International Renewable Energy Certificate (IREC) represents one MWh 1,000 units of electricity produced from renewable energy sources.

SJVN’s 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Power Station has been registered for trading of RECs from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2027. Based on its design, the station can trade around 57.5 lakh RECs annually which in turn convert into an additional revenue of around INR 10 crore annually for company.

EKI Energy Services, roped in by SJVN, is known for its sustainable solutions for climate change and carbon offsets with global standards like CDM, VCS, Gold Standard, GCC, IREC, TIGR and others.

The collaboration of SJVN and EKI is expected to have significant impact on environment as it will lead to reduction in carbon emissions.
