Siemens Energy has secured a major role in the 2.6 GW Taweelah C Independent Power Producer (IPP) project in Abu Dhabi, UAE, supplying advanced gas and steam turbine technology for the combined-cycle power plant.

The scope of work includes three gas turbines, two steam turbines, five generators, and associated auxiliary systems. Once operational, the facility is expected to provide critical grid flexibility, enhance energy security, and support the large-scale integration of renewable energy across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Developed by Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) in partnership with Saudi Arabia’s Al Jomaih Energy and Water Company and Singapore-based Sembcorp Industries, the project will be engineered, procured, and constructed by China Energy Engineering Group Corporation. Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) will serve as the sole purchaser of the electricity generated.

The plant has also been designed to accommodate potential carbon capture and storage technologies in the future, aligning with the UAE’s ambition to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

Karim Amin, Member of the Executive Board of Siemens Energy, said that the project underscores the growing importance of flexible gas-fired generation in maintaining reliable power systems while supporting the energy transition. He noted that the project will feature the first HL-class gas turbine deployed in the UAE.

Manufacturing of the key equipment will take place across Siemens Energy’s global production network, with gas and steam turbines produced in Germany and generators manufactured in the United States.
