Shree Cement to Deploy 100 Electric Commercial Vehicles

Shree Cement, is targeting the commissioning of around 100 electric commercial vehicles during the current year. As India accelerates its infrastructure development and industrial growth, the company is integrating cleaner technologies across its operations to support a more sustainable and cost-efficient manufacturing value chain.

The company is also exploring the use of electric vehicles in mining applications, including dumpers and dozers, extending its focus on electrification beyond transportation and into core manufacturing operations.

This initiative supports both the economy and ecology, reduces India’s dependence on fossil fuel imports, and promotes the development of green technologies such as Electric Vehicles (EVs), hydrogen fuel and biofuels. 

During the last quarter, the share of renewable energy in the company’s total energy mix increased from 61 percent to 66 percent. The company has also initiated small-scale deployment of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) at select locations to evaluate their potential for wider application.

Commenting on this, Neeraj Akhoury, Managing Director, Shree Cement, said, “Sustainability is increasingly becoming an integral part of how we design and run our operations. With renewable energy now accounting for 66 percent of our energy mix this quarter, we are extending this transition beyond manufacturing into logistics, mining and energy storage. He added, “Our planned commissioning of around 100 electric commercial vehicles, alongside exploring electrification in mining and battery energy storage, reflects this commitment. We will continue to adopt solutions that reduce dependence on conventional fuels, improve operational efficiency and contribute to a more sustainable industrial ecosystem.”

Electric mobility presents an opportunity to improve operating efficiency. The Company has indicated that the fuel cost of electric commercial vehicles can be around one-tenth of comparable diesel-powered vehicles, reinforcing their potential as an important cost and sustainability lever across logistics operations

Alongside electrification, the Company continues to work on improving the efficiency of its logistics network. During the quarter, its average lead distance reduced from 459 km to 445 km, while rail accounted for approximately 9 percent of volumes. Shree Cement is also pursuing railway siding projects under the Gati Shakti framework as part of its efforts to optimise freight movement and strengthen its distribution network.

Resource efficiency remains another important pillar of Shree Cement’s sustainability approach. The company maintains Zero Liquid Discharge across its manufacturing operations, with wastewater treated and reused within its facilities. Its plants also use the dry process of cement manufacturing, which requires significantly less water than the traditional wet process.
