SJVN Limited, a Mini Ratna, Category-I, and Schedule ‘A’ Central public sector enterprise, announced its latest achievement in the renewable energy sector. The company has successfully secured Letters of Award for the development of solar power projects with a capacity of 1.3 GW in Maharashtra.
These projects, to be executed through SJVN Green Energy Limited (SGEL), a wholly-owned subsidiary, are slated for development across four districts: Nashik, Solapur, Ahmednagar, and Pune.
Geeta Kapur, the Chairperson and Managing Director of SJVN, revealed that these solar initiatives fall under the ambit of the Mukhya Mantri Saur Krushi Vahini Yojana 2.0, an initiative spearheaded by the Government of Maharashtra to promote solar energy adoption in the agricultural sector.
Initiated in June 2017, the Mukhyamantri Saur Krushi Vahini Yojana aims to install decentralized solar projects ranging from 2 MW to 10 MW within a 5 km radius of agriculture-dominated sub-stations. The revamped version, Mukhymantri Saur Krushi Vahini Yojana 2.0 (MSKVY 2.0), targets 30 percent feeder solarization by 2025, facilitating day-time electricity supply to farmers through the implementation of 7,000 MW decentralized solar projects in fast-track mode.
The Letters of Award were formally received by SJVN in the presence of Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, along with other dignitaries including Akhileshwar Singh, Director (Finance) of SJVN, and Ajay Singh, CEO of SGEL, at an event held in Mumbai on March 7, 2024. Notable officials from the state government, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd., and SGEL were also in attendance.
The development of these solar projects, with an estimated investment of approximately INR 7,436 crores, marks SGEL's maiden contribution to the PM-KUSUM Scheme. These initiatives will qualify for Central Financial Assistance, covering up to 30 percent of the project cost.
The contracts were secured through a competitive bidding process in a tender issued by MSEB Solar Agro Power Limited, Maharashtra. SGEL participated in the tender for 1,500 MW, with 500 MW in Round One and 1,000 MW in Round Two. This scheme aligns with the larger objectives of the PM-KUSUM Scheme, aimed at implementing the largest Feeder-Level Solarisation Scheme in India.
Looking ahead, SJVN envisions substantial growth, setting ambitious targets to achieve 25,000 MW installed capacity by 2030 and 50,000 MW installed capacity by 2040.
