Wind turbine manufacturer Senvion India has unveiled its 4.2 MW wind turbine generator (WTG) prototype at Windergy India 2025. The ceremony at the Chennai Trade Centre was graced by Pralhad Venkatesh Joshi, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.

Built on Senvion’s modular 4XM platform and localised with over 85 percent India-sourced content, the 4.2M160 combines a 160-metre rotor, advanced controls, and high-reliability, data-driven O&M to lift annual energy production while driving down LCOE, the company said in a statement. “Engineered in India but customisable to all operating conditions and diverse wind regimes, the platform is made in India—for India and the world,” it said.

The MNRE Minister said, “The 4.2MW turbine is a testimony to the success of the ‘Make in India’ initiative under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will contribute to the country’s 500 GW ambitions. This is a significant milestone because around 80-85 percent of the equipment and components being used in this prototype are being sourced locally. The turbine is a symbol of India’s focus on Atmanirbharta in renewable energy, driving clean energy and self-reliance – engineered, manufactured, and perfected in India. This launch by Senvion aligns perfectly with the national mission of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Green Growth.’’

Amit Kansal, CEO and MD, Senvion India, said, “We promised a modern, modular, deeply localised platform that helps IPPs capture more energy at a lower lifecycle cost, and we’re delivering. The 4.2M160 is operational, generating, and ready to scale with our suppliers and partners.”

The 4XM architecture enables rapid introduction of future variants and shorter lead times for site-specific configurations. Serial production is expected to start in 2026. With a strong order pipeline of 500+ MW, the platform is set to power new projects across key markets, the company stated.

With close to 1.5 GW commissioned in India, Senvion continues to scale localised engineering, R&D, and manufacturing; deepen domestic supply chains; and support the country’s 2030 renewable-energy goals, it said.
