Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) and Odisha Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC) have signed a Binding Term Sheet for jointly developing large-scale floating solar photovoltaic (PV) projects integrated with battery energy storage systems (BESS) across various reservoirs in Odisha. The projects will be developed through a 50:50 joint venture (JV), with power offtake envisaged through GRIDCO Ltd.

The term sheet was signed by Sivakumar V Vepakomma, Director (Power Systems), SECI, and Amiya Kumar Mohanty, Director (Operations), OHPC, in the presence of Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, Akash Tripathi, Managing Director, SECI, and Vishal Kumar Dev, Additional Chief Secretary, Energy Department, Government of Odisha.

With an estimated floating solar potential of around 12 GW, Odisha offers significant opportunities for harnessing reservoir resources for renewable energy development. Under the proposed partnership, SECI and OHPC are targeting approximately 3 GW of renewable energy capacity under the capital expenditure (CAPEX) mode by 2030.

The initiative also represents an important milestone towards SECI's target of adding 10 GW of capacity through its own projects by 2030, strengthening its portfolio of owned renewable energy assets.

The proposed integration of floating solar PV and battery storage is expected to support the supply of reliable, clean and dispatchable renewable power, particularly during peak demand hours. The collaboration is also aimed at strengthening Odisha's energy security while facilitating greater renewable energy integration into the power system.
