In a significant boost to Nigeria’s water infrastructure, the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) has signed a cooperation agreement with a civil society organisation to implement a large-scale solar-powered well project across the country.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, the initiative will see the drilling of 78 medium-depth, solar-powered wells in 10 Nigerian states, with an estimated 733,350 people expected to benefit from improved access to clean water.

The agreement was signed by Eng. Ahmed bin Ali Al-Baiz, KSrelief’s Assistant Supervisor General for Operations and Programs, during a virtual ceremony hosted at KSrelief’s headquarters in Riyadh.

KSrelief said the project is designed to address a range of pressing needs, including access to safe drinking water for communities and livestock, support for domestic water consumption, and improved water availability in low-income and underserved areas.

Crucially, the initiative also aims to curb the spread of waterborne diseases and parasitic infections, which remain a major public health challenge in many parts of Nigeria. By ensuring a steady and clean water supply, the programme is expected to significantly lower infant mortality and improve nutrition levels.

The solar-powered wells project is part of a broader global humanitarian effort led by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through KSrelief, focussed on enhancing water and sanitation systems, promoting health, and elevating living conditions in vulnerable regions worldwide.
