Saudi Arabia has launched its first hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck equipped with autonomous driving technologies, marking a significant milestone in the Kingdom’s efforts to advance sustainable transport and smart mobility solutions.
The initiative was sponsored by the Transport General Authority (TGA), with support from the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Transport and Logistic Services. The project is being implemented through a partnership involving Ismail Abudawood, Procter & Gamble (P&G) Ltd. and Saudi technology company Hyperview.
The launch forms part of ongoing efforts to accelerate the adoption of advanced technologies in the transport sector, improve logistics efficiency and support the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.
Powered by clean hydrogen fuel, the truck operates with zero tailpipe carbon emissions and can be refuelled within minutes. It offers a driving range of up to 1,500 kilometres, making it suitable for long-haul freight transportation and heavy-duty logistics operations.
The vehicle is equipped with multiple levels of autonomous driving capabilities, along with intelligent digital systems that enable continuous software updates. Artificial intelligence-powered features and a smart vehicle architecture are designed to enhance operational performance, safety and efficiency.
According to TGA, the initiative is expected to contribute to reducing carbon emissions, improving supply chain efficiency, strengthening logistics services and enhancing road safety through advanced autonomous driving technologies.
The project represents a step towards building a more sustainable and technologically advanced transport ecosystem, leveraging hydrogen energy and autonomous mobility solutions to transform the future of heavy-duty freight transport in Saudi Arabia.
