Saudi Arabia Launches 8 GWh Battery Storage Tender to Boost Renewable Energy

Saudi Arabia initiates a 2,000 MW/8,000 MWh battery storage tender with four projects under the build-own-operate model, aiming to enhance grid flexibility and support its Vision 2030 goal of a 50 percent renewable energy share.

Saudi Arabia has officially launched the qualification phase for its inaugural battery energy storage system (BESS) projects, with a combined capacity of 2,000 MW (8,000 MWh), marking a significant step in the Kingdom's renewable energy strategy.

The Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC), the principal buyer of electricity in the Kingdom, announced recently that the first round of the tender will include four BESS projects to be developed under a build-own-operate (BOO) model. Under this model, each winning developer will gain full ownership of their project, providing substantial autonomy and control over operations.

The projects are strategically located across the Kingdom, with two 500 MW facilities planned in the Makkah region – the Al-Muwyah and Haden battery energy storage projects. Additionally, two other projects of equal capacity, the Al-Khushaybi project in Al-Qassim province and the Al-Kahafa project in Hail province, will contribute to the nationwide effort.

Each of these projects will feature four-hour storage capabilities, providing critical support for grid stability and integrating more renewable sources. The winning developers will enter into a 15-year energy storage service agreement with SPPC, ensuring long-term stability and support for these pivotal installations.

This initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 objective to increase the proportion of renewable energy sources in the national electricity mix to about 50 percent. The Kingdom is working towards reducing its dependency on fossil fuels, while BESS installations will play an essential role in balancing renewable generation fluctuations, ensuring consistent and reliable energy supply across the country.

Earlier this year, SPPC launched a 4.5 GW tender for renewable projects and has shortlisted several bidders for four major solar initiatives totaling 3.7 GW. Additionally, Riyadh-based ACWA Power reached financial close on 5.5 GW of solar projects, furthering the Kingdom’s renewable energy ambitions.

The introduction of large-scale battery storage, alongside growing solar investments, reinforces Saudi Arabia's ongoing transition to a sustainable energy future, fostering resilience, flexibility, and increased renewable capacity within its grid infrastructure.
