Egypt's Cabinet has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Chinese wind turbine manufacturer Sany to establish a 2-GW wind turbine manufacturing facility and develop a 2-GW wind power project in the North Gulf of Suez region, marking a major step in the country's renewable energy expansion.

The signing ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat, according to a statement issued by the Cabinet.

The MoU was signed by Sany, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), and the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA).

Under the agreement, Egypt will establish its first wind turbine manufacturing plant with an annual production capacity of 2 GW. The facility is expected to be completed within two years of the signing of the agreements and will manufacture wind turbine equipment and components for domestic renewable energy projects while exporting surplus production.

The agreement also includes the development of a 2,000-MW wind farm in the North Gulf of Suez region. The project is expected to be connected to Egypt's national electricity grid within 23 months of the signing of the agreements.

The initiative supports Egypt's national energy strategy, which aims to increase the share of renewable energy in the country's electricity mix to 45 percent within the next two years.
