A total of 23,96,497 households have installed rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which is around 23.96 percent of the targeted one crore households by March 2027, stated Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
The PMSG: MBY is demand demand-driven scheme, wherein all residential consumers in the country having grid-connected electricity connection of the local DISCOM can avail the benefits of the scheme by applying on the National Portal of the scheme, he said.
As of December 3, 2025, a total of 53,54,099 applications have been received on the National Portal and 19,17,698 rooftop solar systems have been installed across the country covering 23,96,497 households, he said.
Naik further added that the government has set a target of covering 35 lakh households in FY 2025-26, supported by a series of interventions designed to remove friction points and accelerate adoption.
The entire process, from application to subsidy disbursal, is now fully online, ensuring transparency and ease of access. Consumers can also avail collateral-free loans from nationalised banks at a concessional interest rate of around six percent for a tenure of ten years, substantially lowering financial barriers for households.
Regulatory approvals have been simplified as well, with the waiver of technical feasibility requirements and the introduction of auto load enhancement up to 10 kW. The scheme now accommodates RESCO and Utility-Led Aggregation models, while net-metering agreements have been integrated directly into the National Portal to streamline on-boarding. The government has also eased vendor registration norms to ensure ample availability of qualified installers and is simultaneously investing in capacity-building programmes to develop skilled manpower.
