Ramesh Babu V Sworn in as Member of Central Electricity Regulatory Commission

Prior to his appointment, he served as Director (Operations) at NTPC from May 2020 until his retirement.

Ramesh Babu V. has officially taken the oath of office and secrecy as a Member of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC). The oath was administered by Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, R.K. Singh.

Ramesh Babu V. brings a wealth of experience to the Commission, holding an M.Tech Degree in Thermal Engineering and a B.Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering. Prior to his appointment, he served as Director (Operations) at NTPC from May 2020 until his retirement. His tenure at NTPC was marked by various roles, demonstrating his extensive expertise in the energy sector.

The CERC, established by the Government of India under the Electricity Regulatory Commissions Act, 1998, and now operating under the Electricity Act, 2003, is responsible for regulating tariffs of generating companies controlled by the Central Government, overseeing inter-state transmission of electricity, and issuing licenses for inter-state transmission and trading, among other duties. 

The Commission comprises a Chairperson and three other Members, with the Chairperson of the Central Electricity Authority serving as an ex-officio Member.

The major functions of CERC include regulating tariffs, adjudicating disputes, advising the Central Government on policy formulation, promoting competition and efficiency in the electricity industry, and encouraging investment in the sector.
