Rajasthan Discoms Mandate Phase Balancing for Single-Phase Rooftop Solar Connections

Rajasthan Discoms has ordered phase balancing for single-phase rooftop solar to prevent grid imbalance while continuing timely connection approvals statewide implementation.

Rajasthan’s power distribution companies (Discoms) has issued fresh directions to ensure proper phase balancing while releasing single-phase rooftop solar (RTS) connections, following concerns over load imbalance and grid instability.

According to an office order issued by the Discoms, the rapid rollout of single-phase rooftop solar systems, particularly those up to 5 kW, has led to unplanned concentration of solar installations on the same electrical phase. This has resulted in load unbalancing at distribution transformers, reverse power flow, voltage rise, inverter tripping, transformer overheating, and deterioration in power quality.

The order said, “Therefore, all concerned are directed that Single Phase RTS connections shall be released only after ensuring proper phase balancing at Distribution Transformer (DT) level, so that unbalanced load is not created. Allocation of solar connections shall be made on the least-loaded phase, and periodic phase re-shuffling shall be carried out, wherever required. However, release of Solar Rooftop connections shall not be delayed due to phase balancing work.”

Discom officials have been instructed to allocate new solar connections on the least-loaded phase and to carry out periodic phase reshuffling wherever required to avoid imbalance.

However, the Discoms have clarified that the release of rooftop solar connections should not be delayed on account of phase balancing works, underlining their continued support for rooftop solar adoption.

All field officers across Jodhpur Discom, Ajmer Discom, and Jaipur Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd.(JVVNL) zones have been instructed to strictly comply with the new guidelines.

The move aims to safeguard grid stability in areas witnessing high rooftop solar penetration while ensuring uninterrupted growth of distributed solar generation in the state.
