Rajasthan Crosses 5,000 MW of Commissioned PM-KUSUM Capacity

Rajasthan has crossed 5 GW of commissioned PM-KUSUM capacity, with over 2,300 decentralised solar projects benefiting more than 3.34 lakh farmers across 26 districts.

Rajasthan has crossed 5,000 MW of commissioned capacity under the PM-KUSUM scheme, with more than 2,300 decentralised solar projects commissioned across the state.

The milestone was marked on August 18 at an interaction between Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, farmers and solar power developers involved in the programme. Around 70 farmers and developers attended the meeting in person, while more than 200 participants joined virtually from across the state.

Rajasthan’s PM-KUSUM capacity has increased sharply from 123 MW at the end of 2023 to more than 5 GW currently. The programme now covers more than 3.34 lakh farmers, with daytime power for agriculture being supplied in 26 districts.

The interaction also highlighted the impact of decentralised solar projects on participating farmers. Farmers discussed the use of their land for solar projects and the income generated from these projects. Some participants also shared how the additional economic activity had influenced employment and family decisions, including cases where family members working abroad returned to pursue opportunities linked to solar projects.

The programme has implications beyond renewable energy capacity. PM-KUSUM is aimed at providing daytime power for agriculture through decentralised solar generation, while reducing the cost of supplying electricity to agricultural consumers. For farmers participating in the projects, it can also provide an additional source of income from land used for solar generation.

With more than 10,000 MW of PPAs already tied up, Rajasthan has a further pipeline of PM-KUSUM capacity under development.
