QatarEnergy Announces New Solar Power Project to Double Capacity by 2030

QatarEnergy plans to build a 2,000 MW solar plant in Dukhan, doubling Qatar's solar capacity to 4,000 MW by 2030. The project aims to enhance sustainability, diversify energy sources, and cut CO2 emissions by 4.7 million tons annually.

QatarEnergy has unveiled plans to develop a new solar power project that will more than double the country’s current solar energy capacity, aiming to reach 4,000 MW by 2030. Announced recently, the ambitious project includes the construction of a new solar power plant with a capacity of 2,000 MW in the Dukhan area, approximately 80 kilometers west of the capital, Doha.

Talking to media, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and CEO of QatarEnergy, emphasised that the project aligns with Qatar’s long-term strategy to advance sustainability initiatives, diversify its energy mix, and meet its climate commitments. "This new solar power plant will not only increase our renewable energy capacity but also significantly contribute to reducing CO2 emissions by over 4.7 million tons annually," Al-Kaabi said. He added that the project would play a key role in helping Qatar achieve its target of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent by 2030, in line with its National Climate Change Action Plan.

The new Dukhan solar power plant will join QatarEnergy’s existing solar assets, including the 800 MW Al-Kharsaah solar power plant, inaugurated in 2022, which is the country’s first utility-scale solar project. Additionally, two other solar projects are underway in Ras Laffan and Mesaieed industrial cities, with a combined capacity of 875 megawatts and scheduled to begin operations later this year.

QatarEnergy’s expansion reflects the Gulf state's efforts to diversify its energy sources, reduce its reliance on natural gas, and align with global sustainability trends. The new projects underline Qatar's commitment to enhancing its renewable energy portfolio as part of its broader vision for a sustainable future.
