Qatar and South Korea have agreed to reinforce their strategic partnership in energy supplies and expand cooperation into renewable energy and shipbuilding, as part of a broader initiative to ensure stability and sustainability in their energy sectors amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

The agreement was reached during a high-level meeting in Seoul between South Korea’s Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun and Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, according to South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

The discussions underscored the importance of secure energy supplies as tensions rise in the Middle East, a vital region for global energy markets. Qatar, a significant partner in South Korea’s energy landscape, is Seoul’s second-largest supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG), meeting nearly 19.5 percent of South Korea's LNG needs. Both nations emphasised the necessity of stable energy imports to South Korea and expressed readiness to work together in navigating the challenges posed by global energy market volatility.

Beyond traditional energy supplies, the two ministers explored avenues for expanding cooperation to encompass renewable energy sources and hydrogen, aligning with South Korea’s ambitious Carbon-Free Energy initiative. This initiative, first proposed by President Yoon Suk Yeol at the United Nations General Assembly last year, aims to leverage carbon-neutral resources in pursuit of national carbon neutrality goals. Minister Ahn provided an overview of South Korea’s roadmap for this initiative, expressing interest in developing new partnerships with Qatar that could include green hydrogen production and other low-carbon energy solutions.

In addition to energy supplies, the meeting also covered potential collaboration in South Korea’s shipbuilding and LNG carrier industries, sectors where both countries have vested interests and technical expertise. With Qatar’s substantial investments in LNG infrastructure and South Korea’s leading capabilities in LNG carrier manufacturing, these synergies are expected to advance mutual economic interests while supporting the energy demands of the future.

The outcome of the discussions is set to deepen South Korea-Qatar relations across multiple sectors, enabling both nations to harness a broader spectrum of resources and technologies to address their energy requirements sustainably. The strategic partnership underscores a shared vision for energy security, resilience, and carbon neutrality, marking a significant step in South Korea and Qatar’s evolving relationship in the global energy sector.
