The Qatar Fund for Development has announced a financial assistance package worth USD 434.2 million to support Lebanon as the country continues to grapple with a severe socio-economic crisis. The funding is expected to benefit more than 1.5 million people by supporting critical infrastructure and humanitarian services.
A significant portion of the package, around USD 400 million, will be directed toward strengthening Lebanon’s struggling energy sector. The country has been experiencing prolonged electricity shortages following the collapse of its national power system, forcing households and businesses to rely heavily on private diesel generators, which are costly and environmentally harmful.
Through this major investment, Qatar aims to help stabilise electricity supply and support the recovery of the country’s energy infrastructure, a key factor widely seen as essential for Lebanon’s economic revival.
According to the announcement, around 10 percent of the USD 400 million energy allocation will be provided as a direct grant, while the remaining funds will be used for long-term projects aimed at rebuilding and modernising Lebanon’s electricity infrastructure. These initiatives are expected to enhance energy production, strengthen grid stability, and gradually reduce reliance on expensive backup generators.
The financial support comes at a critical time for Lebanon, which has been facing deep economic challenges due to financial mismanagement, economic instability, and the wider impact of regional conflicts. These factors have significantly weakened public services and disrupted economic activity across the country.
In addition to energy investments, about USD 34.2 million from the total package will be allocated to support essential services, particularly the healthcare sector. Part of this funding will be provided to the Ministry of Public Health Lebanon to assist hospitals and medical facilities in maintaining operations and ensuring the availability of essential medicines.
Qatar’s financial assistance also highlights its expanding diplomatic and humanitarian engagement in the Levant region, where it has increasingly participated in efforts aimed at supporting stability and recovery in Lebanon.
Overall, the USD 434.2 million support package is expected to help ease immediate pressure on Lebanon’s infrastructure while supporting long-term recovery efforts. By prioritising improvements in electricity supply and healthcare services, the initiative aims to provide relief for millions of citizens facing energy shortages and economic hardship.
