The Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, to set up a pilot project for producing green hydrogen from biomass – specifically paddy straw.

The MoU was signed by Neelima, Chief Executive Officer of PEDA, and the Registrar of IISc, and formally exchanged between Neelima and Prof. S. Dasappa from the Interdisciplinary Centre for Energy Research (ICER), IISc. The exchange took place in the presence of Shripad Naik, Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy & Power, during the 5th International Conference on Recent Advances in Bio-Energy Research at the Sardar Swaran Singh National Institute of Bio-Energy (SSS-NIBE), Kapurthala.

Punjab’s New and Renewable Energy Minister Aman Arora said the partnership with IISc reflects the state’s commitment to driving clean energy innovation by transforming agricultural waste into green hydrogen. He noted that this initiative will promote a circular economy – empowering farmers, improving air quality, and supplying industries with carbon-free energy – while moving Punjab closer to energy self-reliance.

Arora added that the project would serve as a benchmark facility to demonstrate the technical and commercial viability of producing green hydrogen from agricultural residues. Beyond reducing stubble burning, it will enhance rural livelihoods by creating new revenue streams for farmers and employment opportunities in the green energy sector. The initiative is expected to bolster India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and accelerate Punjab’s renewable energy transition.
