Pune, Maharashtra, emerges as a prime living destination in India, attracting attention for its diverse real estate offerings. The city's real estate sector, particularly the demand for apartments, has surged, recording a remarkable 65 percent increase in housing sales in the June quarter of 2023 compared to the same period last year.

The influx of professionals has fueled the demand for high-quality living spaces, positioning Pune as one of the most sought-after places to reside.

However, this robust growth comes with challenges. The need for sustainable development is paramount, requiring careful land use planning, infrastructure enhancement, and environmental considerations. The construction sector, a significant contributor to carbon emissions, necessitates urgent attention to address environmental concerns in the region.

Recognizing the urgency of decarbonization in the construction sector, The Decarbonisation Business Charter (DBC) has launched initiatives in Pune. The collaborative effort, including the Alliance for an Energy-Efficient Economy (AEEE), Mahindra Lifespace Developers Limited, EcoCollab, and World Resources Institute India (WRI India), aims to mainstream net-zero buildings and construction practices. Over 65 signatories from the sector across India have committed to reducing emissions in their upcoming projects.

The Pimpri Chinchwad Centre of the Indian Institute of Architects’ Maharashtra Chapter (IIA) collaborated with the Decarbonisation Business Charter to raise awareness and build the capacity of the local ecosystem. The initiative emphasizes the critical need for decarbonization, its broader implications for the city, and the identification of actionable points and challenges in the sector.

Ar Paras Netragaonkar, Chairman, IIA Pimpri Chinchwad Centre, emphasized the importance of rediscovering sustainable design principles ingrained in India's vernacular architecture. He stated, "As we engage in extensive discussions about the decarbonization of the sector today, it appears to be a rediscovery of principles that were once ingrained in the past, akin to reinventing the wheel."

The event brought together stakeholders, including architects, sustainability consultants, developers, and government officials, fostering knowledge sharing on interventions and strategies for decarbonization.

Dr. Bhaskar Natarajan, Senior Fellow, AEEE, stressed the need for stakeholders to explore solutions for carbon reduction in the construction and occupation phases of buildings. He emphasised, “Prioritising alternative materials and integrating passive design solutions are crucial steps, and it is equally vital to educate consumers about the low carbon options available in these structures. I urge all stakeholders to participate in the Decarbonisation Business Charter actively, working together to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070.”

The event featured sectoral experts and dignitaries from the region, fostering dialogue on sustainable practices and the path to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070.
