Solar cell and module manufacturer Premier Energies has announced that the company is setting up a 10 GW ingot wafer line in Naidupeta, Andhra Pradesh, with a capex of around INR 5,900 crore. The first phase of 5 GW is expected to be commissioned by December 2027.

Land acquisition has been completed, design work is underway, and construction has already begun, said Chiranjeev Singh Saluja, Managing Director, Premier Energies, during an investor call.

Vinay Rustagi, Chief Business Officer, Premier Energies, added that the company is waiting for the final government announcement on the implementation of ALMM-III for ingot-wafers. While the company plans to commission the second phase of 5 GW in December 2028, it may tweak its plan depending on the ALMM-III and market requirements, he said.

Currently, the company has a production capacity of about 3.6 GW in cells and about 5.5 GW in modules. “Our 5.6 GW module line is set for completion in March 2026, 4.8 GW cell line in June 2026, followed by 2.2 GW of cell line in September 2026. These capacities would make us India's largest and most integrated cell and module manufacturer with total capacity of 10.6 GW and 11.1 GW, respectively,” stated Saluja.

The company last year announced setting up 12 GWh of utility-scale Li-ion BESS assembly by FY28 in two phases. Sharing an update on the company’s BESS manufacturing plans, Saluja stated that the company intends to set up a Li-ion cell to pack in a containerised solution line of 6 GWh capacity in the first phase, with an investment of about INR 280 crore. “The land for this also has been acquired, and the factory construction has been started,” he said.

He further added that the company will take a call on further backward integration into BESS cell manufacturing once the government comes up with localisation guidelines. “Core manufacturing of cell is something we want to go slow on until we get clarity on ALMM kind of protection from the government of India. As of today, it doesn't make sense for us to invest in backward integration because the market is still now open to China,” stated Saluja.
