Pralhad Joshi Urges Wind Industry to Achieve 85 Percent Local Content

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, has called upon the wind energy sector, particularly OEMs and component manufacturers, to raise the local content level to 85 percent from the current 65 percent, emphasising that domestic value addition is key to fortifying India’s clean energy ecosystem.

Speaking at the 7th edition of Windergy India 2025 in Chennai, Joshi highlighted that indigenisation would help India emerge as a global manufacturing hub for wind components. “With indigenisation and high local content, India can capture 10 percent of the global wind supply chain by 2030 and expand it to 20 percent by 2040. India already ranks among the top five countries producing wind components domestically,” Joshi stated.

The minister underlined the need to align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat amid shifting global dynamics and geopolitical uncertainties.

Applauding Tamil Nadu’s leadership in the country’s wind energy growth, Joshi noted that the southern states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh contribute nearly half of India’s 54 GW installed wind capacity. Wind power currently accounts for around one-fifth of India’s total renewable energy capacity of 257 GW.

“The installed capacity has already reached 54 GW, and another 30 GW is in progress. Achieving 85 GW is well within reach to meet our 2030 target,” Joshi said. He added that in FY 2024-25, wind generation reached 3.35 billion units, contributing 5% of the country’s total electricity output, with turbine sizes now averaging 5.2 MW, a testament to advancing technology.

On the export potential of India’s wind energy sector, Joshi said Indian manufacturers are already establishing a presence in the USA, Europe, Australia, Brazil, and several Asian nations. “We will soon launch a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for wind energy, a major step forward for the industry,” he announced.
