POWERGRID Wins ISTS Project to Evacuate 6 GW of Renewable Energy from Rajasthan

POWERGRID has won a tariff-based competitive bidding process to develop an ISTS project for evacuating 6 GW of renewable energy from Rajasthan’s Barmer Complex, with annual transmission charges of INR 3,244.33 crore.

Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID) has announced that it has been declared the successful bidder under tariff-based competitive bidding to establish an inter-state transmission system (ISTS) for evacuating 6 GW of renewable energy from Rajasthan’s Barmer Complex.
 
The project, to be developed on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis, has been awarded at quoted annual transmission charges of INR 3,244.33 crore. The company has also received the Letter of Intent (LoI) for the same, POWERGRID stated in a regulatory filing.
 
It further added that the transmission system will include 6,000 MW, ±800 kV HVDC terminals at Barmer-II in Rajasthan and South Kalamb in Maharashtra, along with augmentation of the South Kalamb substation.
 
The project also involves construction of an approximately 1,000-km ±800 kV HVDC bipole transmission line between Barmer-II and South Kalamb, passing through Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
 
In addition, POWERGRID will construct 400 kV transmission lines in Rajasthan, along with associated bays. The scope also includes installation of two synchronous condenser (SynCon) units at Barmer-II Power Station, along with associated bays.
 
The project will form a key transmission link for evacuating renewable power from the Rajasthan Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) Phase-IV, Part-5, and transmitting it to the western grid.
