POWERGRID Secures JPY 80 Billion Green Loan from JBIC for Khavda-Nagpur HVDC Project

Power Grid Corporation of India has secured a JPY 80 billion green loan from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) to finance the Khavda-Nagpur HVDC transmission project.

Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID) has announced that it has secured a green loan of JPY 80 billion from Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC).
 
The facility is intended to support financing of the Khavda-Nagpur HVDC transmission project, highlighting the strategic collaboration between POWERGRID and JBIC to develop critical infrastructure for renewable energy integration, stated the company.
 
It further added that in line with its commitment to sustainable development, POWERGRID has integrated ESG principles into its core business operations and adopted ESG vision and targets. POWERGRID is actively working towards achieving its goals of net zero emissions by 2047, zero waste to landfill by 2030, and being net water positive by 2030.
 
Headquartered in Tokyo, Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) is Japan's policy-based financial institution, wholly owned by the Japanese Government. Established in 1999, JBIC plays a pivotal role in supporting the sound development of Japan and the international economy by complementing the financing provided by private-sector financial institutions.
 
The loan agreement was signed by POWERGRID and JBIC on June 17, 2026.
 
POWERGRID, India's premier electric power transmission utility and one of the world's largest power transmission utilities, is a key enabler in India's renewable energy integration. As on May 31, 2026, it owns and operates 185,750 ckm transmission lines and 291 sub-stations with a power transformation capacity of 630,516 Mega Volt Amperes (MVA).
 
The company's EHV power transmission network is spread across the length and breadth of India and includes cross-border interconnections. With the adoption of the latest technological tools and techniques, enhanced use of automation and digital solutions, POWERGRID has maintained the availability of its transmission system consistently above 99.5 percent. Expanding its business beyond transmission, POWERGRID has also diversified into consultancy and telecommunication businesses, stated the company.
