POWERGRID Opens Bids for 500 MW/1,000 MWh BESS Deployment Across India

POWERGRID has invited bids for a 500 MW/1,000 MWh two-hour BESS project across India, covering design, supply, erection, testing and commissioning under a long-term agreement.

Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (POWERGRID) has invited bids for a long term agreement (LTA) for the design, supply, erection, testing and commissioning of a 500 MW/1,000 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) across India on a site destination basis.

The tender covers Category A two hour BESS projects. The tender has been floated through POWERGRID's PRANIT Portal.

The tender's pre bid meeting is scheduled for July 28, 2026. The last date for submission of bids is August 17, 2026, while bids will be opened on the same day.

The tender is an open works contract under the Power and Energy sector and is applicable across all states in India. 

As per the technical requirements, equipment, materials and items listed under Annexure K, wherever applicable, must be procured and supplied from domestic manufacturers. Any imported equipment, material, parts or components, including those comprising embedded systems, must be tested at certified laboratories for malware, trojans and other cyber threats and for compliance with Indian Standards as directed by the Ministry of Power and the Government of India.

The technical specification requires the contractor to submit catalogues, engineering data, technical information, design documents and drawings during detailed engineering. The contractor will also be responsible for overall coordination with internal and external agencies, project management, training of POWERGRID manpower, loading, unloading, handling, insurance and movement of equipment to the final destination for successful erection, testing and commissioning.

POWERGRID has specified an ISO aligned quality assurance programme covering procurement of materials and components, vendor selection, manufacturing, inspection, testing, calibration, storage, delivery, erection and commissioning. The company has also reserved the right to conduct quality audits and surveillance of the contractor's and vendors' quality management and control activities.

The supplied equipment must comply with the applicable type and routine testing requirements. Type test reports are required to be submitted along with equipment and material drawings. Tests conducted at accredited laboratories or witnessed by POWERGRID or authorised representatives will be accepted as specified in the technical requirements.

The contractor will be responsible for pre commissioning and commissioning tests following the erection of equipment. Any special equipment, tools and tackles required for successful commissioning tests must be arranged by the contractor at its own cost. The contractor will remain responsible for the equipment and material until it is handed over to POWERGRID in operating condition after commissioning.

The technical specification also requires the contractor to identify products and components that generate toxic e waste under the contract and submit a procedure for their safe disposal at the time of contract closure.
