POWERGRID Acquires SPV for 6 GW Barmer RE Evacuation Project
POWERGRID has acquired the Barmer HVDC Power Transmission SPV for a 6 GW renewable energy evacuation project from Barmer, Rajasthan, involving a ±800 kV, 6,000 MW HVDC system and an approximately 1,000-km transmission line to South Kalamb.

Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID) has announced that the company has acquired Barmer HVDC Power Transmission, the SPV for the development of a major Inter-State Transmission System project for the evacuation of 6 GW of renewable energy from Barmer, Rajasthan.
The project, to be developed on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis, has been awarded at quoted annual transmission charges of INR 3,244.33 crore, POWERGRID stated in a regulatory filing earlier this month.
The project includes establishment of a ±800 kV, 6000 MW HVDC transmission system between Barmer-II and South Kalamb, along with associated substations, transmission lines and system-strengthening works, stated POWERGRID.
The project also involves construction of an approximately 1,000-km ±800 kV HVDC bipole transmission line between Barmer-II and South Kalamb, passing through Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
In addition, POWERGRID will construct 400 kV transmission lines in Rajasthan, along with associated bays. The scope also includes installation of two synchronous condenser (SynCon) units at Barmer-II Power Station, along with associated bays.
The project will form a key transmission link for evacuating renewable power from the Rajasthan Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) Phase-IV, Part-5, and transmitting it to the western grid.
“Being implemented under the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding route, the project will strengthen India’s transmission infrastructure and facilitate large-scale integration of solar power into the National Grid,” POWERGRID said.
