Suriname’s Vice-President Ronnie Brunswijk, accompanied by Minister of Natural Resources David Abiamofo, participated in the inauguration and lighting ceremony of the Botopasi Microgrid Project.

The project is part of the second phase of the Suriname Village Microgrid Solar Project, developed by POWERCHINA. Brunswijk praised the project team for their resilience and dedication in overcoming difficult environmental conditions to deliver a high-quality outcome. He expressed confidence that the team would continue to build on their strengths to complete the remaining construction tasks on time.

The second phase of the Suriname Village Microgrid Solar Project spans the Suriname and Marowijne Rivers in Saramacca province. This off-grid microgrid initiative combines solar power, energy storage, and diesel generation, aiming to serve 45 forest villages.

It includes a solar power capacity of 5.349 MW, energy storage of 18.6 MWh, and diesel generation capacity of 2.813 MVA. The project is expected to produce 8,780 MWh of electricity annually. Since its launch, it has involved three contract signings and amendments, covering nine sites in total.

The Botopasi Microgrid Project is the second site to be completed under this phase. It has a solar capacity of 1,020 kW, energy storage of 2,580 kWh, and a diesel generator capacity of 800 KVA, with an expected annual electricity output of 1,600 MWh.

This project will deliver continuous, reliable electricity to 11 forest villages, significantly improving local living standards and laying a strong energy foundation for future social development.
