Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, R.K. Singh, unveiled ambitious plans for substantial capacity expansion during a session in Rajya Sabha.

Highlighting the remarkable progress made in the last decade, Singh emphasized the transformation of India from a power-deficient to a power-sufficient nation. He attributed this success to strategic initiatives such as the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY), Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS), and Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (SAUBHAGYA).

Under these schemes, significant investments totaling 1.85 lakh crores have been made, resulting in the electrification of 18,374 villages and providing electricity connections to 2.86 crore households. Additionally, the installation of substations, distribution transformers, and feeder separation projects has significantly improved power supply reliability across rural and urban areas.

Furthermore, the government's efforts have led to a substantial increase in power generation capacity, with a staggering addition of 196,558 MW since April 2014. As a result, the availability of power supply has seen notable improvements, with rural areas now receiving 20.6 hours of power and urban areas enjoying 23.78 hours of supply.

Addressing the anticipated increase in power demand, Singh unveiled plans for extensive capacity expansion, including 156 GW of power capacity currently under construction and an additional 469 GW of electricity capacity expected to be added by 2031-2032.

These plans encompass various energy sources, including thermal, hydro, nuclear, and renewable energy. Notably, renewable energy capacity is set to witness a significant boost, with 103,660 MW currently under construction and a total anticipated capacity addition of 322,000 MW by 2031-2032.

To facilitate this expansion, significant investments have been made in transmission infrastructure, with 1,89,052 circuit kilometers of transmission lines and 6,88,142 MVA of transformation capacity added. This has enabled the integration of the country's diverse power sources into a unified grid, facilitating efficient power transfer and contributing to lower electricity tariffs.

Furthermore, reforms in the electricity market, the establishment of renewable energy parks, and initiatives to reduce AT&C losses have been instrumental in enhancing the viability and sustainability of the power sector.

Singh reiterated the government's commitment to achieving its renewable energy targets and ensuring an uninterrupted power supply for the nation's growth.
