THDC India (THDCIL) has commenced the Commercial Operation Date (COD) of the third 250 MW unit of the 1,000 MW Tehri Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant (PSP). Manohar Lal, Minister of Power, commenced the COD virtually from New Delhi.
Speaking on the occasion, Lal said, “This landmark achievement marks India’s first Variable Speed PSP and strengthens our clean energy transition, supporting the Prime Minister’s vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.” He emphasised the critical role of PSPs in ensuring reliable power supply and grid stability, especially with rising renewable energy integration.
Minister of State for Power, Shripad Y Naik, highlighted THDCIL’s leadership in pumped storage and its contribution to India’s energy security. The event was also attended by Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson, CEA, Gurdeep Singh, CMD, NTPC, Sipan Kumar Garg, CMD, THDCIL and other officials.
The Tehri Variable Speed PSP is designed to deliver flexible peaking power and critical grid-balancing support, enabling better management of intermittent renewable energy. Its commissioning strengthens THDCIL’s leadership in advanced hydropower engineering and significantly elevates India’s clean energy stature globally.
