Dr. Anil Kumar Jain, Chairperson of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), held a crucial meeting with Banwarilal Purohit, Administrator of the Union Territory (UT) of Chandigarh and Governor of Punjab, in Chandigarh.

During the meeting, the Chairperson provided a comprehensive update to the Governor on the advancements in Oil and Gas Infrastructure, focusing particularly on the UT of Chandigarh. Dr. Anil Jain highlighted the ongoing initiatives undertaken by PNGRB to realize the Prime Minister's vision of increasing the share of Natural Gas to 15 percent in India's energy basket.

Additionally, the Chairperson apprised the Governor of the progress in promoting natural gas in Punjab, emphasizing the environmental benefits and convenience of using piped natural gas in cooking and compressed natural gas (CNG) in transportation.

Crucial issues were discussed, including the substitution of polluting fuels with natural gas in industrial and commercial units, rationalization of land restoration charges, and Value Added Tax (VAT) on CNG. Dr. Anil Jain underscored that, with the support of the UT Administration, the City Gas Distribution (CGD) licensee aims to provide 'HarGhar PNG' by March 2025, aligning with the city's commitment to being clean and green. The Governor expressed his appreciation for these efforts and assured full support for the development of natural gas infrastructure in the UT of Chandigarh.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Dr. Anil Jain also met with Nitin Kumar Yadav, IAS, Home Secretary, and Adviser to Administrator, along with the Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh. Discussions revolved around promoting natural gas and increasing its usage in domestic, transport, industrial, and commercial sectors. The Home Secretary pledged the full support of the UT Administration towards achieving these shared goals, anticipating a significant boost to the integration of clean fuel in Chandigarh's energy mix.

PNGRB, to date, has authorized 300 Geographical Areas across the country, covering 98 percent of the population and 88 percent of the area for the development of the City Gas Distribution (CGD) Network.

PNGRB's ambitious targets until 2032 include providing 12.5 Crore domestic PNG connections, establishing 17,751 CNG stations, and laying 5,42,224 inch-km pipelines. As of November 2023, the country has witnessed the establishment of 1.2 crore domestic PNG connections and 6,159 CNG stations, marking significant progress in realizing these targets.
