PMSGMBY Portal’s Technical Glitch Sparks Concern in Solar Industry

The rapid increase in the solar business has created an acute shortage of installation staff, solar meters and inverters.

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the much-hyped scheme launched by the government, has been able to raise awareness around solar power and sustainable progress. With an investment of over INR 75,000 crores, the scheme aims to light up 1 crore households by providing up to 300 units of free electricity every month.

However, the rapid increase in the solar business has created an acute shortage of installation staff, solar meters and inverters. Moreover, there has been a delay in the application process, tracking, subsidy release and execution of other activities through the national portal due to a technical glitch. This has created an unfavourable situation for solar installers as well as residential rooftop consumers.

In view of this, one of the renewable energy associations has issued a notification requesting all solar customers to have patience and cooperate with the vendors. The association further advises residential customers to purchase solar systems only from experienced and empanelled sellers, as a lot of cases of fraud are being reported due to such a crisis in the solar industry.

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana was announced in January by Prime Minister Modi with an aim to boost solar adoption. The scheme provides for a subsidy of 60 percent of the solar unit cost for systems up to 2 kW capacity and 40 percent of additional system cost for systems between 2 to 3 kW capacity.  The subsidy has been capped at 3 kW capacity. At current benchmark prices, this will mean INR 30,000 subsidy for 1 kW system, INR 60,000 for 2 kW systems and INR 78,000 for 3 kW systems or higher.
