PM Surya Ghar Yojana Hits 10 Lakh Installations: Here’s How Individual States Have Performed

As per Ministry of New and Renewable Energy data, a total of 10.09 lakh households have benefitted through the installation of rooftop solar plants under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Gujarat leads the adoption with 3,95,490 installations, followed by Maharashtra (2,36,339) and Uttar Pradesh (94,097). Total installed capacity has crossed 3 GW.

A total of 10.09 lakh households, as on March 10, 2025, with aggregated rooftop solar capacity of 3,024 MW have benefitted through the installation of rooftop solar plants under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, stated the Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, and Power Shripad Yesso Naik in the Lok Sabha.

Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024, with a total outlay of INR 75,021 crore, the initiative aims to equip one crore households with rooftop solar systems by the end of FY'27. It has been 13 months since the scheme was implemented.

As per the state-wise data shared, Gujarat leads the adoption with 3,95,490 households having benefitted, representing 39.20 percent of the total. In the last 4 months, installations have gone up by about 1,13,721 – a 40.36 percent increase.

Maharashtra follows with 2,36,339 installations (23.43 percent). In the last 4 months, the state has shown even faster adoption with 1,15,643 installations – a staggering 95.81 percent increase.

Uttar Pradesh and Kerala have recorded installations around 94,097 and 77,972, respectively. The states' numbers have gone up by 42,784 and 26,671 which is about 83.38 percent and 51.99 percent growth, respectively.
 

States like Rajasthan (32,987), Madhya Pradesh (30,324) and Tamil Nadu (28,223) form the middle tier. Haryana, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana contribute to the lower tier, with installations between 13,000-20,000 range. The remaining states together account for 45,115 installations which is roughly about 4.47 percent of total installation.

Interestingly, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Telangana have shown high growth in the last 4 months – 141.14 percent, 108.09 percent and 84.59 percent, respectively.

As per MNRE projections, around 20 lakh installations are projected by October, doubling to 40 lakh by March 2026, and ultimately achieving the target of one crore by March 2027.

And, understandably, the emphasis is being reflected on the budgetary allocation. The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana which has been allocated INR 20,000 crore, in the Budget presented on February 1, 2025. This is a staggering 80.18 percent increase from 2024-2025's revised estimates of INR 11,100 crore.
