PM Surya Ghar Scheme Helps Nearly 19 Lakh Households Achieve Zero Electricity Bills

Nearly 18.94 lakh households across India have reported receiving zero electricity bills after installing rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, the government informed Parliament.

According to a written reply by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in the Lok Sabha, the zero electricity bills were reported by distribution companies and depend on consumers’ electricity self-consumption during a billing cycle.

Maharashtra recorded the highest number of beneficiaries, with 4,17,707 consumers reporting zero electricity bills. Gujarat followed with more than 4.16 lakh beneficiaries across its distribution companies, while Kerala reported 1,91,882, Uttar Pradesh over 1.75 lakh, Rajasthan more than 1.68 lakh and Madhya Pradesh over 1.10 lakh. Odisha reported around 37,678 such beneficiaries, while Chhattisgarh had 16,472.

As of July 24, 2026, the scheme had resulted in the installation of 40,07,355 rooftop solar systems, benefiting 48,21,986 households across the country. More than 35.97 lakh of the installed systems were above 3 kWp, accounting for the largest share of installations.

The government said that implementation of the scheme has also accelerated significantly. While it initially took several months to complete rooftop solar installations for the first one lakh households, the same number of installations is now being achieved in around seven days.

To meet its target of installing rooftop solar systems in one crore households by FY2026-27, the ministry has introduced measures including waiving technical feasibility requirements in certain cases, enabling automatic load enhancement of up to 10 kW, integrating net metering agreements into the National Portal, facilitating collateral free concessional loans, expanding vendor registration and strengthening coordination with state distribution companies.

The ministry said that regular monitoring, regional review meetings, awareness campaigns and a dedicated grievance redressal mechanism are also being used to accelerate implementation of the scheme nationwide.
