PM Surya Ghar Scheme Crosses 26 Lakh Rooftop Solar Installations, Reaches 9.56 GW Capacity
India has installed over 26.21 lakh rooftop solar systems aggregating 9.56 GW under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana since February 2024, benefiting 32.4 lakh households as of March 20, 2026, the Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Shripad Yesso Naik, informed the Lok Sabha.

Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY), since its launch in February 2024, a total of about 26.21 lakh rooftop solar systems, with a cumulative capacity of about 9.56 GW, have been installed across the country benefitting about 32.40 lakh households, as on March 20, 2026, stated the Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) Shripad Yesso Naik, in the Lok Sabha.
Under the PMSG: MBY, it has been estimated that RTS installation in one crore households will produce renewable electricity of 1,000 billion units, which will result in a reduction of 720 million tons of CO2e emission during the 25 years of lifetime for rooftop solar projects, stated MNRE.
Gujarat remains the frontrunner with 5.94 lakh installations covering 8.56 lakh households, followed by Maharashtra at 4.90 lakh installations benefiting 7.79 lakh households, and Uttar Pradesh with 4.21 lakh installations for 4.25 lakh households. Kerala ranks fourth with 2.09 lakh installations (2.15 lakh households), while Rajasthan has recorded 1.59 lakh installations serving 1.64 lakh households.
Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh follow with 1.14 lakh and 1.04 lakh installations respectively, together benefiting over 2.25 lakh households. Assam has also crossed the 1 lakh mark with 1.02 lakh installations, closely followed by Uttarakhand at 71,789 installations and Tamil Nadu at 60,151 installations, both showing steady uptake.
Naik further highlighted that MNRE has undertaken a series of targeted interventions to accelerate rooftop solar adoption and meet its goal of installing systems across one crore households under the scheme. It has enabled a fully digital, end-to-end process – from application to subsidy disbursal – through the National Portal, ensuring funds are directly credited to residential consumers’ bank accounts.
Further, to ease financing, collateral-free loans are being offered by nationalised banks at a concessional rate of repo rate plus 50 basis points (currently 5.75 percent per annum) with a tenure of up to 10 years.
Regulatory bottlenecks have been reduced by waiving technical feasibility requirements and allowing automatic load enhancement up to 10 kW, while integrating the net metering agreement within the application process itself.
The Ministry has also broadened participation by including RESCO and Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA) models, and simplified vendor registration to ensure a robust pool of qualified service providers. In parallel, capacity building and training programmes are being rolled out to develop skilled manpower, alongside sustained awareness campaigns across print, television, and radio platforms to drive consumer adoption nationwide, stated Naik.
