More than 26 lakh households across the country have benefited from the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana as of December 2025, with over 20.85 lakh rooftop solar systems installed since the scheme’s launch in February 2024.
The information was provided by Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha. As per the official data, the Centre has so far disbursed INR 14,771.82 crore as Central Financial Assistance (CFA) under the demand-driven scheme, which allows residential consumers with grid-connected electricity to apply for rooftop solar installations through a national online portal.
Gujarat emerged as the leading state with 5.15 lakh installations, benefitting 7.41 lakh households and receiving INR 3,845.60 crore in financial assistance. It was followed by Maharashtra with 3.91 lakh installations and Uttar Pradesh with 3.26 lakh installations. Other major contributors include Kerala (1.77 lakh installations), Rajasthan (1.19 lakh), Andhra Pradesh (84,618) and Madhya Pradesh (83,665).
Southern and eastern states such as Tamil Nadu, Assam, Odisha and Telangana have also recorded steady uptake, while smaller states and Union Territories including Ladakh, Chandigarh, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Puducherry have joined the programme with growing participation.
The government estimates that rooftop solar installations in one crore households could generate nearly 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity over their lifetime and help reduce around 720 million tonnes of carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions during a 25-year operational period.
