PM Surya Ghar Has 132 GW Potential, Says ISMA Report

India’s residential rooftop solar market has the potential to scale to 132 GW from the current 17 GW installed capacity, with annual installations projected at 9-15 GW between 2026 and 2030, according to the Indian Solar Manufacturers Association (ISMA).

In its report titled Market Sizing and Growth Outlook, ISMA said that nearly 115 GW of additional market potential remains untapped. The association said that this presents a significant opportunity to create sustained demand for domestically manufactured solar components, including solar cells, modules, inverters and balance-of-system components.

The assessment is based on national residential electricity consumption, household housing characteristics and distribution utility tariffs.

ISMA said that the residential rooftop solar segment is entering a phase of sustained scale-up, with the market expected to undergo significant expansion by 2030. The projected annual installation pipeline of 9-15 GW through 2030 could support demand across India’s solar manufacturing and rooftop solar ecosystem.

The report also highlights an “Affordability Effect”, indicating that rooftop solar adoption is expanding beyond states where project economics are naturally stronger. According to ISMA, the PM Surya Ghar scheme has helped make rooftop solar more accessible to households across larger residential markets.

Amit Manohar, Secretary General, ISMA, said that PM Surya Ghar has played an important role in expanding residential rooftop solar adoption, particularly in markets where project economics remain challenging.

“As the current programme approaches March 2027, providing early clarity on its next phase, including consideration of PM Surya Ghar 2.0, preferably by December 2026, would help maintain market continuity and provide greater visibility to consumers and industry stakeholders,” he said.

ISMA said that policy continuity beyond March 2027 would be important to sustain demand and provide manufacturers and other stakeholders with visibility to plan investments, capacity expansion and domestic supply chains.
