Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the G7 Outreach Session in Kananaskis, highlighting India’s commitment to energy security, global sustainability, and amplifying the voice of the Global South.
Speaking at the session themed ‘Energy Security: Diversification, Technology and Infrastructure to Ensure Access and Affordability in a Changing World,’ Modi outlined India's energy approach rooted in the four A's viz. availability, accessibility, affordability, and acceptability. He noted that India, despite being the world’s fastest-growing major economy, had met its Paris Climate targets ahead of schedule.
Highlighting India's leadership in global sustainability, the Prime Minister pointed to initiatives like the International Solar Alliance, Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, Global Biofuels Alliance, Mission LiFE, and One Sun-One World-One Grid. He called on the international community to bolster support for these efforts to build a more resilient planet.
Modi also voiced concern over rising geopolitical instability and its impact on the Global South. “Uncertainty and conflicts are affecting the Global South disproportionately,” he said, stressing that India was committed to amplifying their concerns on the world stage.
Addressing the intersection of technology, AI, and energy, Modi acknowledged the transformative power of AI but warned of its growing energy demands. He called for innovation in clean energy solutions to make digital tools like AI sustainable. He also highlighted the need for secure supply chains of critical minerals and global governance frameworks to guide responsible AI development.
“Technology must improve lives,” he said, adding that India’s rich data landscape could play a central role in shaping responsible AI. Modi concluded by calling for stronger global cooperation to create a people- and planet-centric technological future.
Turning to security, the Prime Minister strongly condemned terrorism, referencing the recent Pahalgam attack. “It was not just an attack on India, it was an attack on all humanity,” he declared. Modi urged the global community to adopt a zero-tolerance stance against nations that support terrorism. “There must be no double standards,” he said, posing three pointed questions to world leaders on the global response to terror threats.
The session was attended by leaders of G7 nations and invited countries. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney hosted the event, which marks the 50th anniversary of the G7.
