Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a rooftop solar scheme aimed at providing free electricity to households across India.

The scheme, which was initially introduced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during the Interim Budget 2024-25, comes with an investment of over INR 75,000 crores and aims to illuminate 1 crore households by offering up to 300 units of free electricity every month.

"In order to further sustainable development and people’s well-being, we are launching the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. This project, with an investment of over INR 75,000 crores, aims to light up 1 crore households by providing up to 300 units of free electricity every month," the PM posted on X.

In his announcement, PM Modi emphasized the government's commitment to sustainable development and the well-being of citizens. He highlighted key features of the scheme, including substantive subsidies directly transferred to beneficiaries' bank accounts and heavily concessional bank loans to alleviate any financial burden. The integration of all stakeholders into a National Online Portal aims to enhance convenience for participants.

To encourage the widespread adoption of rooftop solar systems, the PM outlined plans to incentivize Urban Local Bodies and Panchayats to promote such initiatives in their respective areas. Additionally, he emphasized the potential benefits of the scheme, including increased income, reduced power bills, and employment opportunities.

As part of the scheme, households can avail themselves of a subsidy of INR 30,000 per kW for systems up to 2 kW, and an additional subsidy of INR 18,000 per kW for capacities up to 3 kW. For systems larger than 3 kW, the total subsidy is capped at INR 78,000.

To guide households in determining suitable rooftop solar plant capacities, the scheme provides a breakdown based on average monthly electricity consumption. For consumption levels ranging from 0 to 150 units, a 1-2 kW capacity is recommended, with subsidy support ranging from INR 30,000 to INR 60,000. For consumption levels between 151 to 300 units, a 2-3 kW capacity is suggested, with subsidies ranging from INR 60,000 to INR 78,000. For households consuming above 300 units, capacities above 3 kW are recommended, with a fixed subsidy of INR 78,000.

In a call to action, Prime Minister Modi urged all residential consumers, particularly the younger generation, to support the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana by applying through the dedicated portal at pmsuryaghar.gov.in.
