Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid the foundation stones for two major hydropower projects worth over INR 3,700 crore in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, as part of the government’s push to boost renewable energy in the region.

The projects include the Heo Hydro Electric Project (240 MW) and Tato-I Hydro Electric Project (186 MW), both located in the Siyom sub-basin. Together, they will generate 426 MW of clean electricity, create thousands of jobs, and contribute to India’s target of producing 500 GW from non-conventional energy sources by 2030, including solar, wind, and hydro.

Modi emphasised that Arunachal Pradesh, blessed with abundant natural resources, is playing a central role in the nation’s renewable energy journey. He highlighted that the government’s combined investment in the Northeast, including renewable energy, infrastructure, and social development projects, now exceeds INR 5,100 crore, reflecting a significant boost to regional development.

The Prime Minister also stressed the broader impact of these initiatives, which include improved connectivity, healthcare, and tourism infrastructure. “With noble intentions and honest efforts, Arunachal Pradesh is emerging as a key driver in India’s sustainable growth and energy self-reliance,” Modi said.

Governor Lt. Gen. K.T. Parnaik (Retd), Chief Minister Pema Khandu, and Union Minister Kiren Rijiju were present at the event, witnessing the launch of projects that aim to accelerate the state’s renewable energy capacity while fostering economic growth.
