In a compelling address at the UN Global Compact Network India’s (UNGCNI’s) 18th National Convention, Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas and Housing & Urban Affairs, underscored India's pivotal position in the global pursuit of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He emphasized that India's success is integral to the success of the SDGs, considering its status as the world's most populous nation with the fifth-largest and fastest-growing economy.

The convention, inaugurated by Puri, convened various dignitaries including Arun Kumar Singh, President of UN GCNI and Chairman and CEO of ONGC; Isabelle Tschan (Shan), Resident Representative of UNDP India; and Ratnesh, Executive Director of UN GCNI. Themed 'Advancing Sustainable India: Driving Change with Forward Faster 2030,' the event featured sessions discussing critical topics such as accelerating climate change action, fostering prosperity through sustainable finance, and promoting living wages for economic empowerment.

Reflecting on India's significant strides in achieving SDGs over the past decade, Puri highlighted the lifting of over 250 million people out of multidimensional poverty, a testament to the nation's commitment to inclusive growth. He lauded flagship initiatives like the Swachh Bharat Mission and AMRUT for transforming the water and sanitation landscape, making India open defecation free.

Amid global challenges, Puri commended India's approach to sustainable development, particularly its progress in providing clean water and sanitation—a feat unmatched by many nations grappling with similar issues. Despite the financing gap, he noted India's proactive stance in mobilizing resources and implementing impactful initiatives.

Puri also highlighted the government's efforts towards women empowerment, noting a shift towards women-led schemes and the introduction of the historic Women’s Reservation Bill. He pointed out India's progress in meeting sustainability targets, including advancements in ethanol blending and the promotion of emerging technologies such as battery energy storage systems and e-mobility.

Acknowledging the critical role of the private sector, Puri emphasized the integration of sustainability into business operations, beyond mere Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. He cited ONGC as an example, showcasing how sustainable practices integrated into core operations have led to a significant reduction in emissions.

In his closing remarks, Puri reaffirmed India's commitment to sustainable development, guided by international agreements and collaborations such as the Lima Conference, the 2015 Paris Agreement, and initiatives for women-led development. He hailed the UNGC as a valuable ally, providing guidance, expertise, and collaboration opportunities in advancing the sustainability agenda.
