During the inaugural International Conference of Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulators held as part of the India Energy Week 2024 in Goa, Petroleum Minister Hardeep S. Puri reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision to significantly increase the share of natural gas in India's energy mix from 6 percent to 15 percent.
The conference, organized under the auspices of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), saw participation from major South and Southeast Asian National Energy Regulatory Authorities, including Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, alongside international industry leaders. S&P Global Commodity Insights served as the knowledge partner for the event.
With the overarching theme 'Navigating Pathways for Natural Gas Development,' the conference underscored the pivotal role of natural gas in accelerating emissions reduction to meet climate targets in emerging and developing nations.
Deliberations across five plenary sessions encompassed diverse topics, from geopolitical uncertainties affecting energy security to rapid infrastructure development, public-private partnerships, and institutional growth. An exclusive roundtable of international regulators facilitated the exchange of best practices and collaborative strategies to enhance energy security and governance.
Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, in his address, commended the PNGRB for its initiative and stressed the need to integrate international regulatory conclaves of oil and gas regulators as a regular feature of the India Energy Week. Dr. Anil Kumar Jain, Chairperson of PNGRB, highlighted the significance of regional collaboration among South and Southeast Asian countries to foster knowledge sharing and formulate effective regulatory frameworks for natural gas development.
Speakers at the conference emphasized the critical role of natural gas as a transition fuel in achieving net-zero emissions and highlighted the geopolitical uncertainties impacting energy supply to developing nations. They also underscored India's efforts in natural gas regulatory and infrastructure development, particularly in the city gas distribution sector, to provide reliable and affordable clean energy. Industry leaders advocated for a regional clean energy agenda among South and Southeast Asian nations, emphasizing the importance of interconnected gas and electricity grids.
The International Conference of Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulators served as a platform for knowledge exchange and networking, enabling stakeholders to forge partnerships and shape the future trajectory of natural gas development.
