A total of 8,885 Electric Vehicle (EV) public charging stations (PCS) have been installed across the country under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles in India (FAME-II) Scheme, as of July 1, 2025.

Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Steel Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma shared the update in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

Citing data received from the Ministry of Power (MoP), Varma further stated that a total of 29,277 public EV charging stations have been installed nationwide.

Launched on April 1, 2019, and concluded on March 31, 2024, the FAME-II Scheme provided demand incentives for electric two-wheelers (e-2W), three-wheelers (e-3W), four-wheelers (e-4W), and grants for deployment of e-buses, as well as establishment of EV public charging stations.

As per the government data, the scheme has facilitated the support of a significant number of EVs across different categories, including 14,35,065 e-2Ws, 1,65,029 e-3Ws, and 22,644 e-4Ws. Under the electric buses category, 6,862 units were committed, and 5,165 units have been deployed.

Under FAME-II, the Phased Manufacturing Programme (PMP) was also introduced to promote domestic manufacturing of electric vehicles, their assemblies, subassemblies, and parts/sub-parts. Only EVs compliant with PMP were incentivised under the scheme.

The Minister also highlighted the steps taken to attract private investment in battery manufacturing and EV supply chains under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. These include: PLI Scheme for Automobile and Auto Component Industry in India (PLI-Auto) and PLI Scheme for National Programme on Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) Battery Storage.

Notified on September 23, 2021, the PLI-Auto scheme aims to enhance India's manufacturing capabilities for Advanced Automotive Technology (AAT) products (including EVs and their components) with a budgetary outlay of INR 25,938 crore.

The PLI-ACC scheme was approved in May 2021 with an outlay of INR 18,100 crore to establish 50 GWh ACC capacity.

To meet future demand, the government has also allocated INR 2,000 crore under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme for the installation of adequate EV charging infrastructure on pan India basis.
