India has experienced a significant surge in its electric vehicle (EV) market, with over 1.5 million EVs registered in the country over the past two years, specifically from June to December.
The Minister of State for Heavy Industries, Krishan Pal Gurjar, presented this data in a written reply in Lok Sabha, dispelling concerns of a slowdown in EV sales and highlighting the growing acceptance of electric mobility.
The e-vahan portal of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways provides a month-wise breakdown of registered electric vehicles, showcasing a continuous upward trend in EV adoption. To further accelerate the transition to electric mobility, the Indian government has implemented several initiatives.
The Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles in India (FAME India) scheme, in its second phase, was notified for five years starting from April 1, 2019, with a total budgetary support of INR 10,000 crores. Additionally, a Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for the automotive sector was approved on September 15, 2021, with a budgetary outlay of INR 25,938 crores, offering incentives of up to 18 percent for electric vehicles.
The National Programme on Advanced Chemistry Cells (ACC) Battery Storage, another PLI scheme approved on May 12, 2021, with a budgetary outlay of INR 18,100 crores, aims to establish a competitive ACC battery manufacturing setup in the country.
To encourage the adoption of EVs, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways announced the introduction of green license plates for battery-operated vehicles, accompanied by an exemption from permit requirements. States were also advised to waive road tax on EVs, reducing their initial costs.
These proactive measures by the government, combined with the growing number of EV registrations, underscore India's commitment to fostering a sustainable and eco-friendly transportation future.
