Oman took a bold step toward its 2050 carbon neutrality goals with the inauguration of the Oman Centre for Net Zero during the opening of the Oman Petroleum and Energy Show (OPES) 2025 and Oman Sustainability Week (12-14 May).
The event is being held under the patronage of HH Sayyid Taimour bin Asaad Al Said at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre. The centre, operating under the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, will spearhead the development and implementation of the national net-zero strategy. It will also offer advisory support to stakeholders and monitor decarbonization initiatives to help shape Oman’s low-carbon future.
In a major push for green investments, state-owned energy company OQ signed 13 strategic agreements worth over RO 769 million to boost renewable energy projects across the country. Additionally, OQ Exploration and Production signed four contracts exceeding RO 21 million with local firms and SMEs, reinforcing local content development.
The event also witnessed the launch of 'Tamayuz,' a new programme by OQ in collaboration with the Oman Energy Association. It aims to train 430 Omani graduates across technical and non-technical fields, strengthening human capital in the energy sector.
Further, Abraj Energy Services signed a drilling contract with Ara Petroleum for three wells in Concession Area 44, with drilling set to begin in Q2 2025. The contract is expected to generate RO 1.6 million in revenue.
Speaking at the event, Eng. Salim Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, highlighted Oman’s commitment to sustainable development, energy transition, and economic diversification. “OPES and Oman Sustainability Week are key platforms that reflect our dedication to reducing emissions and building a greener, more resilient economy,” he said.
With participation from over 50 countries, more than 350 exhibitors, and 2,400 delegates, OPES 2025 has become a global forum for dialogue on energy transition, innovation, and climate action.
