Oman has the Potential to be the Largest Hydrogen Exporter in the Middle East by 2030, Reports IEA

Titled ‘Renewable Hydrogen from Oman: A Producer Economy in Transition’, the report describes how rich renewable resources and vast land expanses could make Oman a competitive low-emissions hydrogen supplier by 2030

Oman can be the largest hydrogen exporter in the Middle East by 2030. According to a report published by International Energy Agency (IEA), the country could produce renewable hydrogen as cheaply as USD 1.6/kg. The report further says that it has potential to become the sixth largest exporter of hydrogen globally this decade.

Titled ‘Renewable Hydrogen from Oman: A Producer Economy in Transition’, the report describes how rich renewable resources and vast land expanses could make Oman a competitive low-emissions hydrogen supplier by 2030.

Oman intends to generate at least 1 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen a year by 2030, up to 3.75 million tonnes by 2040.

“Oman is an oil and gas producer country that is taking an enlightened approach to its energy future, with a clear long-term vision and strong net zero ambitions. Thanks to its huge potential for low-cost solar and wind, renewable hydrogen is set to bring multiple benefits to Oman. The IEA is very pleased to be working with Oman on policy and technical matters as the country moves ahead on its journey to a net zero economy and shows other producer countries what is possible,” said Dr Fatih Birol.

Oman’s Minister for Energy and Minerals, Salim Al Aufi said that Oman is blessed with globally competitive solar and wind energy resources. “The most economically rational action for us is to embark on using this as the most viable and sustainable energy of tomorrow, including decarbonising the power generation, local industry and hydrogen production for export,” he added.
