Oman is evaluating a major power transmission project to connect the geographically isolated Musandam Governorate with the country's Main Interconnected System (MIS) through a 141 kilometre subsea electricity cable, a move aimed at enhancing grid reliability, energy security and long-term power supply in the strategically important region.

The proposed project, being developed by Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC), would involve the installation of the Sultanate's longest submarine power cable, linking Musandam to the national electricity grid. The interconnection is expected to reduce the region's dependence on standalone power generation while enabling more efficient and reliable electricity transmission.

According to OETC, the project is currently in the planning stage and is targeted for commissioning by 2030, subject to regulatory guidance and approvals from the Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR).

Musandam, an Omani exclave separated from the rest of the country by the United Arab Emirates, occupies a strategically significant location overlooking the Strait of Hormuz. The planned subsea interconnection is expected to strengthen the resilience of the region's electricity network, improve operational efficiency and support future economic development and investment.

The project also reflects Oman's broader strategy to modernise its electricity transmission infrastructure and expand national grid connectivity through advanced transmission technologies, including submarine cable systems. The experience gained from similar projects is expected to support future interconnection initiatives across the Sultanate.
