NTPC Limited, India's leading integrated power company, is preparing to roll out the latest iteration of its flagship Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, the Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM).
Aligned with the Government of India's Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao initiative, GEM aims to address gender inequality by nurturing the aspirations of young girls and providing them with opportunities for growth and development.
Scheduled to commence in April 2024, the upcoming edition of GEM will welcome approximately 3,000 deserving children from underprivileged backgrounds across 42 identified locations within the power sector PSU. This expansion will bring the total number of beneficiaries under the mission to over 10,000.
Originating as a pilot project in 2018, GEM has evolved into a nationwide movement, overcoming challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic to sustain its growth and impact. Since its inception, the program has empowered a total of 7,424 girls, with participation numbers steadily increasing each year. In 2023 alone, 2,707 girls engaged in the workshop across 40 NTPC locations, spanning 16 states of India.
The core focus of the GEM Mission is to empower girls through various interventions aimed at nurturing leadership qualities and preparing them for the future. The comprehensive workshop covers topics such as health, hygiene, safety, fitness, sports, and yoga, providing participants with essential skills and knowledge.
Renowned for its holistic approach to skill development, confidence-building, and mentorship, the GEM Workshop has earned widespread acclaim. By equipping girls with the necessary tools and unwavering support, NTPC aims to pave the way for a brighter future for generations to come.
The initiative seeks to empower girls to become agents of change, not only within themselves but also within their families, communities, and the nation as a whole.
