State-owned NTPC is planning for 30 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047, stated Minister of State in the Ministry of Power, Shripad Naik, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

This is a part of the Government’s decision of having 100 GW nuclear capacity by 2047, he said.

He informed that Anu Shakti Vidyut Nigam (ASHVINI), a JV of NTPC and Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL), is in the process of establishing a 4×700 MW nuclear power project in Banswara district of Rajasthan, called Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (MBRAPP).

The current projections envisage initial testing of MBRAPP’s first 700 MW unit by FY 2032-33, stated Naik.

Further, NTPC formed a wholly-owned nuclear subsidiary, NTPC Parmanu Urja Nigam (NPUNL), in January 2025, to advance its nuclear power targets.

Naik stated that in order to explore various options and possible collaborations with international partners, NTPC has issued an Expression of Interest (EoI).
