NHPC's auction to develop 125 MW/ 500 MWh standalone battery energy systems (BESS) connected to intrastate transmission system (InSTS) in Kerala has discovered an L1 (lowest bid) tariff of INR 4.34 lacs/MW/month.
NTPC Green Energy has emerged as a winner bagging two projects with a cumulative capacity of 80 MW/320 MWh. It has won 40 MW/160 MWh at Pothencode Substation at a tariff of INR 4.57 lakh/MW/month and another 40 MW/160 MWh at Sreekantapuram Substation at a tariff of INR 4,34,000/MW/month.
Opera Energy has secured 15 MW/60 MWh at Mulleria Substation at a tariff of INR 4.38 lakh/MW/month.
The reverse auction for the balance of 30 MW/120 MWh is still pending.
The tender for this was floated in January 2025.
Successful bidders are required to ensure the BESS operates for at least one cycle per day, maintains a minimum system availability of 95 percent each month, and delivers a monthly AC-to-AC roundtrip efficiency of no less than 85 percent.
The bidder must deploy commercially established and operational technologies to minimise the technology risk and to achieve commissioning of the projects.
Developers will be eligible for Viability Gap Funding (VGF) of INR 27 lakh/MWh or 30 percent of the project's capital cost, whichever is lower.
The last discovery in Kerala for SECI's 125 MW/ 500 MWh capacity was INR 4.41 lacs/MW/month, which was won by JSW.
