NTPC Calls for EOI for 50 MW Concentrated Solar Power Project with Thermal Energy Storage

The applicants are required to ensure the supply of 50 MW renewable energy power with a minimum annual availability of 70 percent during peak demand and non-solar hours.

NTPC, India's largest power utility company, has announced an Expression of Interest (EOI) inviting Indian and global companies, consortia, affiliates, and representatives to participate in setting up a 50 MW Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) Project. The project will include a Thermal Energy Storage System (TESS) for 8 hours of operation during both peak and non-solar hours.

According to the EOI, the TESS will be discharged to meet power requirements either during two power blocks at full capacity or at partial load distributed throughout the non-solar hours. The applicants are required to ensure the supply of 50 MW renewable energy power with a minimum annual availability of 70 percent during peak demand and non-solar hours.

Interested parties can access the EOI documents free of cost from the designated websites. The deadline for queries and seeking clarifications is set for April 24, 2024, while the last date for submission of the EOI is May 9, 2024. The responses will be opened on May 14, 2024, and will remain valid for six months from the last date of submission.

CSP technology, which utilizes solar irradiation to drive utility-scale steam turbines and heating and cooling systems, is recognized globally as a proven technology. Its integration with TESS offers a range of benefits, including the supply of firm and dispatchable renewable energy power during peak demand and non-solar hours.

The scope of the project for the applicant or CSP Power Generator includes identifying and developing land, arranging statutory clearances, developing infrastructure facilities, and ensuring project operations and maintenance. NTPC's scope involves floating tenders for developer selection, evaluating bids, issuing letters of award, and signing power purchase agreements.

The responses received through the EOI will enable NTPC or its group companies to provision for green power, identify interested developers, technology suppliers, and EPC players, and finalize commercial agreements with identified prospects.
